Emergency Plumber in Sioux Falls, SD: Stop the Water, Then Get the Right Help

Check for a gas smell and keep clear of water near outlets or the electrical panel; then close the main water shutoff, usually in the basement where the service line comes in, next to the meter. As of November 6, 2026, after-hours plumbing in national cost guides runs $125–$170 per hour, against a normal $45–$150 per hour, and a burst pipe repair typically costs $400–$2,000. Below: the five steps that limit the damage, what is and isn't worth an after-hours call, and how to check the plumber's license.

First: stop the water

Most of the cost of a plumbing emergency is the water, not the pipe. Do these in order, and start with your own safety.

  1. Check for danger before you go near the water. If you smell gas, leave the house and call 911 or the gas utility from outside. If water is near outlets, cords, a sump pump, the furnace or the electrical panel, do not walk into it: switch off the breaker from a dry spot if you can reach the panel without standing in water, and otherwise stay out and call for help.
  2. Close the main water shutoff. Once it is safe to reach, find the valve where the water line enters the house, usually in the basement or utility room near the meter. Turn a lever a quarter turn so it sits across the pipe; turn a round handle clockwise until it stops. If only one fixture is leaking, its own supply valve (under the sink or behind the toilet) may be enough.
  3. Open the lowest faucet. With the main closed, open a faucet in the basement or on the ground floor to drain pressure out of the pipes. The leak slows to a trickle as the lines empty.
  4. Isolate a leaking water heater. Close the cold-water valve on top of the tank. For a gas heater, turn the gas control to Off; for an electric one, switch off its breaker.
  5. Take photos, then call. Photograph the water, the source and any damaged materials before you start cleaning up. Your insurer will ask for them, and a plumber can price the repair faster from pictures.

Emergency or can it wait?

  • Burst or split pipe: emergency Even with the main off, the line needs repair before you can run water again.
  • Sewage backing up: emergency Stop using every drain in the house. Water in the lowest drain means the main line, not one fixture.
  • Leaking water heater: emergency Close its cold inlet and shut off gas or power. A tank that is leaking from the body is done.
  • No water in a cold snap: urgent A dead faucet usually means a frozen line. Thaw it gently and keep the faucet open; a split shows itself as it thaws.
  • Slow drain, drip, running toilet: wait Annoying, not damaging. A weekday appointment avoids the after-hours rate.
  • Gas smell: leave Out of the house first, then 911 or the gas utility. Not a plumbing call until the gas is handled.

What to tell the plumber

  • What is happening and since when, and whether the main shutoff stopped it.
  • Where the water is: basement floor, inside a wall, ceiling below a bathroom, around the water heater.
  • What kind of pipe you can see (copper, grey or white plastic, galvanized steel).
  • Whether you have a sump pump and whether it is running.
  • Your address and whether the house is on city water and sewer or a private well and septic system.

Before you let anyone start

South Dakota licenses plumbers through the State Plumbing Commission, and the City of Sioux Falls requires its own plumber contractor license of contractors working inside the city. Ask for the name on the license, not just the name on the van, and confirm it on the state and City lists. Ask for the after-hours rate and the diagnostic fee up front, and whether a repair tonight can be a temporary fix with the permanent one priced for a weekday.

Common questions

What counts as a plumbing emergency?

Water you cannot stop with a valve, sewage coming up through a drain or tub, a burst or split pipe, a leaking water heater, no water at all in winter, or a gas smell near a water heater. A slow drain, a dripping faucet or a toilet that runs is urgent but not an emergency, and waiting for a weekday morning usually saves the after-hours rate.

How much does an emergency plumber cost in Sioux Falls?

As of November 6, 2026, national cost guides put after-hours plumbing at $125–$170 per hour, or an extra $100–$300+ on top of the regular bill, against a normal rate of $45–$150 per hour. A burst pipe repair itself typically runs $400–$2,000. No Sioux Falls company publishes prices, so ask for the after-hours rate before anyone is dispatched.

Can I wait until morning?

If the main shutoff stopped the water and nothing is backing up, usually yes. Keep the water off, leave the lowest faucet open, and move anything that matters off the wet floor. If sewage is coming up, the water heater is leaking into a finished space, or you cannot find a valve that stops the flow, do not wait.

Where is my main water shutoff?

In most Sioux Falls houses it is in the basement where the water service comes through the foundation wall, next to or just past the water meter. Newer houses may have it in a utility room. Find it now, on a dry day, and make sure everyone in the house knows which way it turns.

Does the plumber need a license for emergency work?

Yes. Under South Dakota law (SDCL 36-25-17), licensed plumbing work on a property connected to public water or sewer must be done by someone licensed by the State Plumbing Commission; the City of Sioux Falls also requires a City plumber contractor license of contractors working in the city limits. The license check page shows both lists.
