Repair vs. replacement
| Work | Range | When |
|---|---|---|
| Camera inspection | $125–$500 | Before any repair, and after a second backup |
| Snaking the main | $175–$600 | A first clog, no history |
| Hydro jetting | $300–$800 | Grease, scale, light roots; pipe must be sound |
| Sewer main line repair (HomeGuide) | $1,880–$3,700 | A localized problem the camera can pin down |
| Full replacement | $50–$250 per linear foot | Collapsed, badly sagged or failing along its length |
Replacement cost by length
| Run length | Total |
|---|---|
| 10 linear feet | $500–$2,500 |
| 20 linear feet | $1,000–$5,000 |
| 40 linear feet | $2,000–$10,000 |
| 60 linear feet | $3,000–$15,000 |
| 80 linear feet | $4,000–$20,000 |
National ranges; the average replacement in the HomeGuide data is $6,000. The plumbing costs page draws from the same file.
Trenchless methods
| Method | Per foot | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pipe bursting | $60–$200 per linear foot | Pulls a new pipe through while breaking the old one; needs a pit at each end |
| Cured-in-place lining (CIPP) | $90–$250 per linear foot | A resin liner cured inside the old pipe; not for collapsed sections |
Trenchless work costs about what open-cut does per foot. Where it wins is everything above the pipe: a driveway, a mature tree, a sidewalk or a finished basement floor that would otherwise be cut and put back. Ask for both prices when the line runs under anything you would rather keep.
What drives the price here
- Depth and length. The deeper the line and the longer the run from house to main, the bigger the trench and the total. (We have not read the City's bury-depth requirement; the contractor will know it.)
- What is on top. Lawn is cheap to open. Concrete, asphalt and tree roots are not.
- Where the break is. Under the house or under the street costs more than mid-yard, and work in the public right-of-way involves the City.
- Pipe material. Older clay and cast-iron lines fail at joints and are the usual candidates for lining or bursting.
- Season. Frozen ground in winter makes open-cut work slower and dearer; trenchless is less affected.
Permit and licensing
The City of Sioux Falls counts building sewers as part of the plumbing system, requires a permit before any alteration, and requires a groundwork inspection before the trench is backfilled. Any person paid to do plumbing work in the city must work through a plumbing contractor licensed with the City. At the state level, South Dakota licenses plumbers, plumbing contractors and sewer-and-water contractors through the State Plumbing Commission. See the permits page and the license check.
Not confirmed here: exactly where the owner's responsibility for the line ends and the City's begins, the City's bury-depth rule, and the permit fee. Each is a question for Building Services (605-367-8670) or the contractor, and nothing on this page states a figure for them.
